Ammie Brod is a Chicago-based contemporary violist with the new music group Ensemble Dal Niente. She studied classical viola with Hong-Mei Xiao, Roland Vamos, and Emanuel Vardi, and earned degrees from the University of Arizona and Northwestern University before joining Dal Niente.
During her time with Dal Niente, Brod has performed across the U.S. and Europe, and she was part of the ensemble contingent to win the Kranichstein Music Prize at the Darmstadt Summer Courses in 2012. She has worked with many composers including Enno Poppe, Chaya Czernowin, Mark Andre, Eliza Brown, and Katherine Young, and has had the distinct pleasure of performing G. F. Haas’s In Vain on three separate occasions. She appeared on Dal Niente’s most recent recording, Assemblage, featuring the notated works of composer and performer George Lewis, and she has played her viola with objects ranging from a chopstick to an espresso cup. She is currently at work on a commissioning project of works for solo viola and small ensemble, scheduled for winter 2018.
In addition to her performing role, Ammie is also Dal Niente’s social media guru, helping to raise both awareness and funds for a variety of projects. When not performing, she works as a professional floral designer and makes gourmet ice cream for her own personal enjoyment.
